Breaking: MetaMask Booted From App Store

It looks like the self-custodial wallet MetaMask has been ousted from the Apple App Store as it no longer appears on the platform.

MetaMask Booted Without Explanation

Direct links to the app including the one on MetaMask’s download page are no longer functional. Until the time of this writing, no explanation whatsoever has been offered as to why the crypto wallet was removed from the App Store. At the same time, it is not clear if MetaMask will return to the Apple app store anytime soon.

It is also surprising to know that no executives from MetaMask have commented on the shocking development. Also, Apple has not made an official statement about the withdrawal of support for the popular crypto wallet service provider.

Noteworthy, a similar situation happened last year but with top rival Trust Wallet. The wallet was delisted from the App Store in 2022 but unlike MetaMask whose team appears quiet about its removal, the team behind the Trust Wallet made immediate moves to allay fears in the community. In no time, the Trust Wallet was reinstated in the App Store.

In 2021, the crypto wallet TokenPocket was also removed from the App Store after PayPal complained about the wallet’s look-alike logo. In this case, Apple made an official announcement about the temporal removal, citing PayPal’s trademark compliance.

Will MetaMask Services be Strained?

As one of the industry’s most trusted self-custodial wallets that cater to over 30 million active users, this recent development is likely to take a toll on MetaMask. The company had recently introduced a crypto-to-fiat feature to enable seamless money transfer on its platform.

Markedly, customers would only be required to click on the new “Sell” feature to initiate a conversion of their digital assets to the fiat currency of their choice which is eventually sent to their bank accounts. However, the service is only available to MetaMask users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and some parts of Europe and it is unclear how the current App Store removal will impact the offering.

While many users are still able to use their mobile wallets on iPhone, the browser extension is still available for all.
